I applaud any and all black filmmakers. What I struggle with is this cookie-cutter mentality that black films must educate, preach, justify, or right a wrong. My experience as a moviegoer is that this philosophy usual leads to a not so entertaining film. It's partly my fault. I'm stubborn in my old age. I want to be entertained not preached to. Also, how did he end up with a co-writer who is white? Why not a co-writer who is black?

The issue that the government had with the Panthers is the information that was being disseminated that was unifying not only red, brown and yellow people but young white radical liberals that were against the establishment. There purpose was fruitful because now the educated are against the uneducated, the rich are against the poor and the system moves on as it was designed to... All Power to the people! Right On 👊🏽

The slave trade came about because a black man sold his people to the white man, when you watch Amistad 1997, you will see in one of the scenes when Djimon Honsou was in the village with his family and other black men captured him with a rope out of nowhere.. no a white man but a black man did it. Kanye is loony! When he said slavery was choice but looking at it now it was choice for the chiefs that sold there people they choose to sell us. We our are own worst enemy. And films like Amistad and this one proves it. We don't love each other. We abuse each other

Shaka King a ridiculous person who is being intellectually dishonest. He claims that Hollywood is not a meritocracy, but I'd argue that until fairly recently, at least for Black actors, it has been. Kalyuua was tapped for this film early on. There was never an attempt to get the story right, especially when you get an actor who could never embody the character, on all fronts: The 2 main actors are a decade older than the film's subjects. A far-reaching element of the history is how the youth were activated in the Civil Rights era. O'Neil was a 17yr old, stripping away what that context means you've branded this kid and his actions with the same sentiment you would a full grown man. You've done what the country has always done; treating Black children adults. Beyond that you've also given us a weak editorializing of Chairmen Fred through the lens of a "Judas"; the title alone obscures the significance of the history you're communicating. This movie was terrible at it's inception. I find all of this: the film, the director and the direction, the production, the casting, the story, all of it, to be offensive. And Charlemagne is wrong on all accounts. He is a puppet. I see he is not trying to fumble whatever bag he's getting. He's become someone who I really look at as a "Judas".

@muffet nellon this same idea applies in the working world. if your only agenda is to do a good job and be helpful you will inevitably end up being exploited by opportunistic coworkers. You will find yourself getting more assignments and being under promoted while observing equally and less competent individuals with an agenda ascending. been there done that.

    2. Stan Learner

@muffet nellon this is bar far the most intelligent comment I have heard on this topic. you are exactly right. "we" as black Americans do not have the Jew vs Gentile mentality when it comes to self determination and advancement. And we have adopted the belief that looking out for self, like everyone else does, is sinful and divisive. I can't believe the praise Kaluya is getting after hearing his indiscernible murmuring. Hampton was much more articulate than that. But it doesn't matter as you clearly understand. Jamaicans would riot if Shamar Moore was caste as Bob Marley.

  63. TA HARQA
    преди 2 месеца

It was terrible. If you know "anything" about Fred Hampton; you'll know that movie was waaaaay off on many levels. First thing; Daniel Kaluyya looks NOTHING like Hampton, he's too old to play the 21 year old civil rights icon "PERIOD". William O'Neil who was 17 when he was coerced to join the BP Party was a middle class black kid who wanted thrills so he got into crime and was coerced to join the BP party - we can understand more clearly the fears of a teenage black kid and feel the angst of being a "rat" more deeply than that of a grown man. Stansfield always does a great job but he was too old for the role it was a gross misrepresentation. The movie would've been waaaay more impactful if age appropriate actors were cast instead of a clearly older LaKeith Stanfield (32), Kaluyya and the actors who portrayed Mark Clark who was 22 and Akua Njeri (Hampton's lady). I could go on - but the movie is full of holes, the shootout at the headquarters, the killing of Hampton, the "allusion" that he was poisoned (did O'Neil poison his drink or not? The movie leaves that huge piece for you to guess about). The thing that scared J. Edgar Hoover were these "young adults" not grown men as represented by Kaluyya and Stansfield. Young adults and teens being affected by the Civil Rights movement to a degree where they took action - the future was scary for Hoover. Fred Hampton's lady and only child didn't even have input on the movie...Imagine that!

@muffet nellon What more moves can we expect from this system? We shouldn’t expect anything from “this system!” What can be done in the context of “storytelling” is independent movies not tied to HOLLYWEIRD!!! That’s a start. Look at the Harriet Tubman movie...another failure in which they introduced a character named “Bigger Long” who was hunting for Harriet ... no such man existed. The children will see this and think it accurate. What if our young children can look at the screen and get the “unvarnished” truth? Keep books in their lives - don’t rely on the imagery. It’s oftentimes INCORRECT!!!

But truth be told the star of this movie for real for real is Hoover‘s program.... so let’s celebrate these brothers and sisters for bringing this story to the ‘big screen’ because you all know what they had to do to do so
